"The
tragic events of Atherstone saw the first national deployment of 10 USAR
teams, more than half of the UK provision. Conditions were exceptionally
tiring and crews worked around the clock in shifts over a three-day period
in extremely arduous conditions. One of the best decisions I made during
the early stages was to call for the services of REST UK on scene. Their
support and help for the technicians undoubtedly prolonged active deployment
times and also provided a focal point for welfare for all crews on the
ground. I would strongly urge any commander at a protracted incident to
consider this or a similar provision."
